The contrarian take: the dog park beats the beach in July

Most visitor guides will tell you the Gulf beach is the obvious play for a dog in Port A. We'd push back on summer. From mid-June through August, midday sand climbs past the burn threshold for paws on routine summer afternoons. The off-leash park on Avenue G stays in the shade later in the morning, has fresh water on tap, and lets the dog actually run without a 6-foot tether. Save the beach for sunrise and after-6 p.m. in those months.

Beach rules in plain English

Dogs are welcome on every public beach in Port Aransas, every day of the year — including I.B. Magee Beach Park, Horace Caldwell Pier, and the long open stretches reached by Access Roads 1A, 1, and 2. The rules:

• Leash 6 ft or shorter, at all times on the sand, no exceptions.
• Pick up after your dog. Bring bags. Trash cans sit at the dune line at most accesses.
• Fresh water on hand. Gulf water dehydrates a dog fast.

The Port Aransas Dog Park on Avenue G is fully fenced, with separate runs for large and small dogs, water stations, and shaded benches. Open dawn to dusk, no fee, no membership. Busiest in the cool hours — sunrise and after 6 p.m. in summer.

Under Texas health code, restaurants can welcome dogs on outdoor patios at their own discretion. In Port A that means a generous rotation of taquerias, brewpubs, ice-cream stops, and seafood patios regularly hosts dogs. Renting with a dog

More vacation rentals on Mustang Island go pet-friendly each season. Expect:

• A one-time pet fee per dog.
• Size limits.
• Breed restrictions on some insurance-tied properties.
• A small dog maximum on most listings.

Confirm in writing before booking. Showing up with an undeclared pet voids the rental.

Heat, jellyfish, and other beach-day risks

• Hot sand: May through September the sand can climb to paw-burning temperatures by noon. Five-second palm test.
• Jellyfish: Watch for purple sail-shaped floats (Portuguese Man o' War) on the tide line in spring. The sting hits dogs as hard as people.
• Rip currents: Don't let dogs swim past the second sandbar. Check the daily surf and conditions report before going in.
• Sandspurs: Small brown burrs in the dune grass — painful in paw pads. Stay on the wet sand or the marked walkovers.
