The street-legal rules

Port Aransas city ordinance lets golf carts and Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs) run public streets up to 35 mph — and that covers basically the entire island. To be legal on the road you need:

• Texas DMV registration as a "Golf Cart" (slow-speed, flag required) or as an LSV (street-legal, license-plated).
• Liability insurance. Required, same as for a car. A standard golf cart policy runs.
• A valid driver's license for whoever's driving. No unlicensed kids on public streets, no exceptions, no "just to the corner store."
• Headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and reflectors if you'll drive after dark or on a posted 35-mph street.
• A seat and seatbelt for every passenger. No standing on the rear deck. No lap-riding.

Can I take it on the beach?

Yes. Golf carts roll the public beaches under the same rules cars follow. You'll need a Beach Parking Permit to park, the 15-mph beach speed limit is enforced, and the same "stay on hard sand, off the dunes" rule applies.

The contrarian take: don't rent the biggest cart

Most rental shops will happily push you up to a six- or eight-seater because the day rate is higher. We'd tell you the opposite. Two adults with a beach bag are fine in a four-seater, and the smaller cart is easier to thread through downtown traffic and parks anywhere. The big carts feel impressive on day one and tedious by day three. Size to the people who'll actually sit in it, not the people who might.

Renting a cart

Most rental fleets sit close to Alister Street or the bigger condo properties. The basic menu:

• 4-seater (street-legal): — good for couples or a small family running into town.
• 6-seater (street-legal):, the standard family or small-group rental.
• "Lifted" or off-road carts: higher day rate, sold on beach driving — confirm the rental is street-legal if you also plan to drive on town roads. A beach-only cart leaves you walking to dinner.

Common mistakes that get tickets

• Handing the keys to an unlicensed teen for a quick gas-station run. This is the single most common ticket Port A PD writes on carts.
• Driving an unregistered cart that "came with the rental house." Ask the owner for the registration paperwork before you take it out — if they can't produce it, leave it parked.
• Crossing Highway 361. The state highway runs 45–55 mph through town and carts aren't allowed on it. Cross only at signalized intersections and stick to the parallel side streets.
• More riders than seats. The fine compounds per passenger.
